#12 Veronica Guerin
Veronica Guerin was a crime reporter, she had been assassinated by the drug lords. It was the most horrifying mafia crime in Ireland, triggered on media and public person. She was 37 years-old, she died on 26th of June 1996.
She wrote about crimes, about the Irish Republican Army. She started writing about the drug dillers for Sunday Independent, she wanted to uncover John Traynor. He gave her warning and numbers of threats, death threats, included. While writing about the crime kingpin Martin Cahill – she was given a serious thereat, the shots were triggered onto her house. She ignored it. In 1995, she was shot in the leg, lucky the bullet missed her head, where primarly it was set upon. Still, Guerin wrote about drug dillers and fought for an independent Irish press.
Sep 1995 – Guerin was attacked by John Gilligan. He had severely beaten her. He also threaten her He would kindnap and rape her son, Guerin herself will be murdered. She took the threats for granted, however, she didn't stop the investigative journalism.
On June 25th, 1996 Guerin was driving along the motorway, Dublin, near the Newlands Cross. She stopped her Opel Calibra at the traffic lights. Within this short space of time she was shor six times by one of the two men sitting on a motorcycle. The investigation lasted years, the breakthrough came from Amsterdam, where John Gilligan was caught and extradicted to Ireland in 2000. Brian Meehan and John Traynor fled to Amsterdam, Meehan was found and captured due to joined UK SOCA/Regiokorpsenoperation in 2010. Traynor lives in Kent since 2013.
