English Language Acquisition - The Teacher.
English language teaching is not an easy task, yet, it might be very successful if teacher who plays a key role in this process fulfills certain requirements.
Some my I ask; who is a perfect teacher? Well, there is no perfect teacher, yet, there are some features which make a person a good teacher.
Good teachers lead the lesson in a way it doesn’t make students bored to death, so they will not fall asleep. It also means teachers like their job very much and do all they can to make their lesson interesting. The personality of the person is crucial, it reflects the lesson and vice versa. The variety of angles the lesson portrays the subject is important, teacher has to have knowledge, has to show he or she knows the topic. It is nice to be amused during the lesson, it enhances the learning process. The teacher is a leader, a crucial issue in the classroom, he responses to the questions that appear during the lesson, he is a problem-solver. Therefore good preparation to the lesson is very important.
Successful teacher is a person who reads the needs and aspiration of the learners, he or she foresees the upcoming success and possible difficulties in learning acquisition.
Pointing out a problem and mistake is not an easy task, teacher does it without offending the students, by means of underlying good points first. He or she helps never shouts.
Having lots of students in the classroom is sometimes confusing, knowing their names is a must. It helps to maintain a discipline during the lesson, it must be remembered – troublemakers do make the lesson miserable and tend to waste the time of the teacher and others, those who want to learn. Teacher has to know how to control boisterous classes. It is one of the most fundamental teaching skills. The eye contact is important, intonation pattern and body language, respectively.
Teacher portrays the subject and gives instructions. He does it throughout the lesson checking students' attention and comprehension of the subject. Instructions are short and plain. Response is adequately short and quick. Moreover every single topic presented and explained by the teacher should be summarized, the best way to do it is discussion. Dynamic switching from core matter to another, so students keep thinking, go from one task to another, they try not to be bored. The stimulus is important, it might be listening comprehension, speaking activities such as brainstorming or even short test at the end of the lesson.
Taking everything into consideration, preparation and teachers’ personality is important to make a lesson an interesting one. The whole learning process successful and coherent.
