The origins of the language - Dutch Language; based on Northon Anthology of English Language and Literature.

Dutch is the third Germanic language. It comes after English and German, but is spoken by far more people than Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or Frisian. In fact, with its approximately twenty-two million speakers. Compared with most of the world's languages the history of Dutch is very well documented, and for this reason it gained attention very early on in international linguistics. Outside, however, not much is known about Dutch, certainly far less than is known about the Netherlands and Belgium , the countries where Dutch is the standard language. Many a tourist in the Low Countries is surprised to find that there is a Dutch language which is quite distinct from German or English. Needless to say   ‘Nederlands’, ‘Hollands’   and   ‘Vlaams’   are three separate names for the same language. This lack of clarity in terminology is sometimes confusing for foreigners, so confusing that it regularly leads to the misconception that the standard language in the Netherlands ...

January 2013: A conversation, not an interview, something that popped out of the blue and turned out to be a nice time.

James Brossman is someone I like, someone I met in Belgium at the beginning of 2013, when I was heading to Noord Brabant,  after a couple of days I decided to “escape” so I did it, and went to Belgium. What James does for a living for one may be outrageous, for me quite OK, he told me something interesting about so-called “fucking-business” He has definitely some distance – between, acting or performing and living his life. But he confessed he’s got some difficulties  to keep his private and professional life together. He admitted it is difficult, especially – love making, making love at home, every day, every night, distracts his performances. And it is the other way round. I asked him how it is, to perform a rough sex so often, how was it at the beginning of his porn acting, he told me it was difficult, the girls he was about to act with were more brave, and ready than he was. I asked him why – adult movies? His answer was very quick with a broad smile on his face, honest an...

Willem Bilderdijk - XVII th century writer

Obraz
Dutch   poet , the son of an  Amsterdam   physician . When he was six years old an accident to his foot incapacitated him for ten years, and he developed habits of continuous and concentrated study. His parents were ardent partisans of the  House of Orange-Nassau , and Bilderdijk grew up with strong monarchical and  Calvinistic  convictions. After studying at  Leiden University , Bilderdijk obtained his doctorate in law in 1782, and began to practise as an advocate at  The Hague . Three years later he contracted an unhappy marriage with Rebecca Woesthoven. He refused in 1795 to take the oath to the administration of the new Batavian Republic , and was consequently obliged to leave the Netherlands. He went to  Hamburg , and then to  London , where his great learning procured him consideration. There he had as a pupil Katharina Wilhelmina Schweickhardt (1776-1830), the daughter of the Dutch painter  Heinrich Wilhelm Schweickhardt ...

Hugo Grotius and the Origins of the Enlightenment in The Netherlands - the seminar by Marion Archer - Truslov , 2007, The Dutch Republic and Britain. All Rights Reserved (C)

A very interesting lecture - I didn't know some of the facts portrayed below - a nice reading. Hugo Grotius and the Origins of the Enlightenment in the Netherlands Marion Archer Truslow Rabun Gap Nacoochee School Rabun Gap, GA NEH Seminar 2007; The Dutch Republic and Britain: The Making of Modern Society and a European World Economy Might the origins of the Enlightenment lie in the Netherlands instead of (or as well as) in England and France? During a discussion in our National Endowment for the Humanities seminar the week of July 16, 2007 on “The Dutch Republic and Great Britain in the Era of the Industrial Revolution,” Dr. Gerard Koot mentioned that possibility. John Locke, Thomas Paine, and David Hume along with Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Diderot do a great deal to explain the British and the French parts of the Enlightenment, but not the Netherlands’ experience, which could have had its origins in the Dutch “Golden Age.” Professor Koot’s insightful comment prompted me to examin...
